Red, yellow and green have stood for Bolivia since 1,851, red for the blood of independence, yellow for its mineral wealth, green for its land. A separate flag, the whipala, a checkerboard of the same colours arranged diagonally, flies alongside it to represent Bolivia's indigenous nations.
