Great Sphinx
Carved from a single limestone outcrop near Giza, the Sphinx is generally dated to the reign of Khafre, around 2,500 BCE, using leftover stone from his own pyramid complex. Fringe theories claiming it is thousands of years older rest on erosion patterns that most geologists attribute to rain in Egypt's wetter early climate, not a lost prior civilization.
