Face on Mars
A 1976 Viking orbiter photo of a Martian mesa looked, in low resolution and odd lighting, like a carved human face. Sharper images from later missions showed an ordinary eroded hill. NASA's own analysis calls it pareidolia, the same trick of the brain that finds faces in clouds.
