Taaffeite
Taaffeite was identified in 1945 by Richard Taaffe, who noticed a faceted stone in a Dublin jeweller's tray did not behave quite like the spinel it was labelled as. It remains the only gemstone ever discovered from an already-cut, finished stone rather than from raw rock.
