A landmark was originally something you steered by. The word meant a boundary stone or a fixed feature you could take a bearing from, a mark on the land that told you where you were. Only later did it come to mean a thing worth travelling a long way to stand in front of.

Almost none of these were built to be admired. They went up as tombs, defences, churches, seats of government, water supply and trade fair advertising, and a surprising number were disliked on sight. When the Eiffel Tower was going up, a public letter of protest signed by Maupassant, Dumas and a long list of respected Paris artists denounced it as a useless monstrosity that would disfigure the city.

It was only supposed to be there for twenty years. The tower was the entrance arch for the exposition of 1,889 and its permit ran out in 1909, at which point it was to be taken down and sold for scrap. It survived because it made an unusually good aerial for the new radio-telegraph. The most recognisable structure on Earth is a temporary fairground entrance that was kept on a technicality.
