Birds of Brazil and Mexico
78 cards · Artist William Swainson
Before lithography a naturalist drew his bird and then handed the drawing to a professional engraver, who cut it into copper. What reached the page was the engraver's reading of it. Lithography let the artist work straight onto the stone instead, and William Swainson was the first naturalist to do it, beginning with Zoological Illustrations in 1820. The line on these plates is his own.
The stones printed in black. Colour went on afterwards by hand, one copy at a time as orders came in, worked against pattern plates Swainson painted himself so the colourists had something to match. It is careful work, but it is still handwork, which means no two copies of the book are quite alike.
He was also certain that nature was built in fives. The quinarian system held that every natural group divided into exactly five subgroups, which arranged themselves in circles touching their neighbours, and Swainson went on defending it long after the rest of the field had let it go. He was mocked for it. In 1,841, the year these plates were published, he left Britain for New Zealand.
