Tarot began as a card game, not a fortune-telling tool. Italian courts in the 1430s added a fifth suit of picture cards, trionfi, to the ordinary four-suit deck already in use, and by the end of the century the game built around them, tarocchi, was popular across Italy with no mystical reputation attached to it at all.
The occult reading of the cards is a much later invention. In 1,781 a French writer named Antoine Court de Gebelin claimed, without a shred of historical evidence, that the deck secretly preserved the wisdom of ancient Egypt, and the claim caught on well enough that it permanently reshaped how people thought about a three-hundred-year-old card game.
The cards most people picture today, distinct little scenes on every Minor Arcana card rather than a repeated pattern of cups or swords, come from one specific 1909 deck. The illustrator Pamela Colman Smith gave each of the fifty-six minor cards its own small story, a decision so influential that nearly every tarot deck made since has followed her lead rather than the plainer decks that came before her.
