Waterhouse was born too late to be a Pre-Raphaelite and painted like one regardless. The brotherhood had formed in 1,848, five years before he was born, and by the time he had a career of his own the fashion had moved on to other concerns entirely. He spent forty years on Tennyson, Keats, Ovid and Malory as though nobody had told him.

He kept returning to the same few women. Circe, Ophelia, the enchantress, the nymph, the Lady of Shalott, painted and repainted across decades, each time as a specific person in a specific minute rather than a symbol. He exhibited at the Royal Academy for most of his working life and was elected to it in 1895.

The Lady of Shalott he painted three times, and backwards. The 1,888 canvas is the end of the poem, the lady already in the boat and already dying. The 1,894 one is the middle, the instant she turns to look at Lancelot and the curse arrives. The 1915 one is the beginning, still at the loom, half-sick of shadows. He worked back through Tennyson over twenty-seven years.
