Toto's Wizard of Oz

138 cards · Artist W. W. Denslow

Baum and Denslow paid for the pictures themselves. No publisher in 1900 would carry the cost of a children's book printed in colour throughout, so the two of them covered the plates, shared the copyright, and put both their names on the title page as equals. Illustrators did not get that.

W. W. Denslow came out of newspapers and poster work, and he drew the book the way a poster is drawn: heavy outlines, flat colour, figures that read at a distance. Twenty-four colour plates and colour running through the text on nearly every page, which is what made it so expensive and why it sold the way it did.

The colour is a map. Denslow shifted the second ink to match wherever Dorothy happened to be, blue through the Munchkin country, green once the Emerald City is in sight, yellow in the west among the Winkies. A reader who never looked at a single word would still know how far she had travelled.
