Phantom Time Hypothesis
German author Heribert Illig proposed in 1991 that nearly 300 years of the Middle Ages, 614 to 911 AD, were simply invented, supposedly to let a Holy Roman Emperor claim the symbolically important year 1000. Mainstream historians reject it outright, pointing to the sheer volume of independently dated evidence it would require faking.
