Rarity is simply how few exist

Every set is minted as a numbered run, and every copy's mint number is on its page. The first copy of a card is the first copy, and there will never be another.

  • Rarity runs from Common up to Xtra Rare and beyond.
  • Secret Rares stay off the checklist until you pull one.
  • Graded cards get a public serial with set, card, mint number.

Rarity, editions and serials

Rarity

Every card in a set has a rarity, printed on the card and shown on its page and its slab plate.

  • B, Basic: the Zone 1 flag, the one card everybody is handed. Below Common.
  • C, Common and U, Uncommon: the bulk of every pack.
  • R, Rare, VR, Very Rare and XR, Xtra Rare: the top card of a pack, each scarcer than the last. A set's count of each is fixed when it is minted.
  • 2XR, Double Xtra Rare: the black paw, above Xtra Rare. Never in a pack; the top of a merge chain.
  • SR, Secret Rare: a card the checklist does not admit exists until you pull one. A set of 28 with a secret reads 29 of 28 once you have it.
  • T, Trophy: a prize you make, not pull: the card a finished puzzle awards. Minted Flawless, guaranteed, and never traded or sold.
  • P, Promo: a card given away, not sold. Promo says how the card reached you, not how scarce it is: a promo can be as common or as rare as any other card.
  • O, Original: extremely rare, a one of one numbered print.

Copies and serials

A set is minted as a run: every card printed a fixed number of times, and every copy numbered in the order it came off the press. That number is the copy's mint number, and it is on the card's page. Low numbers are the point: the first copy of a card is the first copy, and there will never be another.

When a card is graded, its plate carries a public serial: the set's short code, the card number, the mint number, and the grading number, in that order. TWWOZ79-2-1 is Toto's Wizard of Oz, card 79, the second copy minted, and the first of that card anyone registered.

Editions

A set is printed in an edition: Beta, First, Limited or Unlimited, and a single card can be Numbered or an Original. What each means is on its own page, Editions.
